We are proud to announce the release of a new CD by soprano Rebecca Karpoff

BUCCHINO:  This Moment

SHIRE:  Back on Base (Closer Than Ever)

This Moment: Music of Bernstein, Bucchino,

Bolcom, Sondheim and others

This Moment features the artistry of Rebecca Karpoff in remarkable, live performances of North American music, ranging from the poignantly touching songs of Bucchino and Sondheim to laugh-out-loud interpretations of works by Bernstein, Bolcom, and Greer.  Audience laughter is ever-present and the listener is captivated by Karpoff’s charisma and story-telling ability, as she infuses each vignette with dramatic intensity, a wide range of vocal colors, and impeccable timing.  From the opening, “So, where do ya wanna go, first?” (in Bernstein’s “Come Up to My Place”) it's a fun, rollicking ride of great music—with occasional turns toward tender, affecting moments.

Welcome the music of Ernst Bacon to our website!

Ernst Bacon (1898 - 1990) was one of that pioneering generation of composers, along with Thomson, Copland, Harris, and others, who found a voice for American music. As a composer, Bacon belonged to no "school" and followed no fads.  He was only interested in pursuing his own path and being himself.  Self-taught in composition except for two years of study with Karl Weigl in Vienna he experienced the depression of post-war Europe at first hand and concluded that the European avant-garde movement, reflecting the pessimism of that era and locale, was not appropriate to America.  Returning to Chicago, he set out to write music that expressed the vitality and affirmation of our own country.  Sometimes compared with Bartok, he incorporated into his music the history and folklore, as well as the indigenous music poetry, folk songs, jazz rhythms, and the very landscape of America.

An Exciting New Release of Beethoven Trios

as heard at the Skaneateles Festival!

Curtis Macomber, violin ▪ Lindsay Groves, cello

Peter Rejto, cello ▪ Fred Karpoff, piano

Trio in E-Flat Major, Op. 70 No. 2

 I.  Poco sostenuto; Allegro ma non troppo

The performance was reviewed by

David Abrams of the Syracuse Post-Standard:

"The unusually festive crowd, which at times resembled more of a group of party revelers than your typical classical-music audience, stomped their feet, hooted, hollered and whistled.  And they had good reason to do so….Violinist Curtis Macomber, cellist Lindsay Groves and pianist Fred Karpoff opened the program with an explosion of energy, in a performance of Beethoven's Trio in E-Flat.  Unafraid to take chances, the trio played with vigor and spirit and total confidence--using the many dotted rhythmic patterns to drive the work to fevered pitches......"

From the Society for New Music

Immense variety

Chamber music by American composers -
recommended by
PATRIC STANDFORD

'This is a most worthy undertaking ...'

Richard Wernick: A Poison Tree, 1979

from American Master for the 21st Century

"The New York based Society for New Music has produced a remarkable five-CD box which, it says, is a natural result of its own stated mission to commission and promote regional composers. The contents, about six hours of very contrasting and splendidly performed chamber works, include commissions that span the life of the Society which was formed in 1971 to support the growth of the central New York musical community.

"The contents are kaleidoscopic, a dazzling array of styles from 29 composers of all ages -- some, like Earl George, Ann Silsbee, Howard Boatwright and Brian Israel  honored but no longer here with us to appreciate the effort. Others draw attention to the youngest composers in this anthology; Augusta Read Thomas, born 1964, who is represented with a brief and powerful cello solo, Bells Ring Summer  and two short clever piano pieces; and the Chinese born Ping Jin, also born 1964, whose ensemble piece Yangtze! Yangtze! comes over as a colorful and enthusiastic little masterpiece."
