Patricia DeAngelis,
pianist
Patricia DeAngelis
graduated magna cum laude from the School of Music, Syracuse University, where
she was a full scholarship student. She received the Master of Music from S.U.,
also in piano performance. Beginning piano at nine, her first teacher was Verda
Dippold. During high school and college she studied with the head of the piano
department at S. U., American composer/pianist George Mulfinger. Her mentor for
the master’s degree was Frederick Marvin, a protégée of Claudio Arrau. Both
Mulfinger and Marvin trace their pianistic lineage directly to Beethoven, so
that Patricia and her students also “go back to Beethoven”. Mrs. DeAngelis
attributes much of her teaching philosophy to the late Hungarian pianist Gyorgy
Sebok and to American pianist Leon Fleisher, having attended many of their
master classes around the world. Several of the gifted students with whom she
has worked have distinguished careers – e.g. Kevin Murphy, assistant conductor
at the Metropolitan Opera; Steven Rosenfeld, concert pianist; Gina Figal,
pianist/teacher; Aimee Pushlar, choral director/pianist, to name a few. She
served on the music faculty of Colgate University for 20 years and has recently
retired. She has also taught at l’Ecole Hindemith in Switzerland.
As a performing pianist, Patricia has been heard in Carnegie Hall and Town Hall with the
Syracuse Symphony Woodwind Quintet; on station WQXR with The Trio Dolce; as
concerto soloist with the SSO, Colgate University Orchestra and the Onondaga
Civic Symphony; in summer festivals in Blue Mountain Lake, Old Forge and
Skaneateles; as soloist in colleges and museums throughout the USA; and as
ensemblist in numerous collaborations with symphony and university players.
She and flautist Christopher Dranchek, her musical partner of more than 20
years, frequently perform at Utica College.
